New Year 2020 Celebration in Armenia
2020 was a hard year for Armenia and Armenians, thus Some people do not celebrate New Year 2020. The last few months of 2020 had been devastating for the Armenian nation, in addition to the Covid-19 pandemic that has swept over the country, Armenia has also participated in a war for the region of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). Thus, this year, the Armenian government has decided not to put up a Christmas tree in the Republic Square (which is put up every year for New Year’s) and not have New Year’s decorations in the city. New Year’s celebrations for 2020 will be subtle, to say the least, and it won’t have the same festive atmosphere it always has had.
Holidays and Days Off
Most shops work until the 30th of December, or until approximately 5-6 p.m. on the 31st. Supermarkets and pharmacies are one of the only places that are open late, until approximately 10 p.m. They are also one of the first places to open; they open almost business-as-usual on New Year’s Day. There are 24-hour supermarkets and pharmacies open around; some may take a short break around midnight and be open right after.
However, most places open within a week of New Year’s Day; some open on the 4th of January, some later, depending on the type of shop and the necessity.
The shops that open as early as possible are those that sell chocolate, fruits, toys, alcoholic beverages, and other products that are bought as gifts when visiting others’ houses on New Year’s Day.
